Ms Barton said the prescription had ‘made history’ as it is the first since cannabis was outlawed in 1928.
While NHS doctors have been dragging their feet to prescribe medical cannabis Carly Barton took steps to obtain her prescription by going private.
Carly who has been using cannabis illegally to ease the pain from her fibromyalgia for years.
She is believed to be the first UK patient to be prescribed the drug, although the NHS was not the source. The prescription was provided by private pain specialist Dr David McDowell and will be costing £2500 for a three-month supply.
Ms Barton will still encounter a delay as the Home Office has to authorise the delivery of the drug from the Netherlands. However it may be the first and the last as she will be using her savings on just one prescription, she is hopeful that a NHS doctor will renew prescriptions.
“There is an unfair system where the rich will have access and the poor will still have their doors kicked in by police,’ she said.
