In the universe of cannabis strains you can find many plants that stand out for their unique beauty. For a lot of cannabis lovers these are the plants that get purple tones either in their flowers or leaves.
At Sweet Seeds® we love to explore all the potential that the cannabis plant has to offer. This motivated us to work in the research and development of this type of purple marijuana strains since 2011.
At some point, most cannabis growers have wished to obtain purple buds in their crops. If you find this topic interesting and you are looking forward to know more about purple cannabis plants, just keep reading!
Why does purple cannabis exist?
These strains acquire purple tones during flowering because of the anthocyanins present in the leaves, stems and flowers of the marijuana plant.
A large amount of anthocyanins makes it possible for plants to acquire red or purple tones in their buds.
It is true that cold temperatures can contribute to a plant acquiring reddish tones. It should be noted that our purple marijuana strains do not need high daily temperature variations, since their red and purple tones come from their genetics, originating from the Chitral area in the Pakistani Hindu Kush.
Through selective breeding programs, we were able to raise the amount of anthocyanins present in these varieties to a maximum extent, allowing us to fix the purple flower characteristic in all the offspring. These shades appear during flowering, giving wonderful colours to the buds and even, in some individuals, to the leaves.
What is the difference between purple marijuana and “normal” marijuana?
Currently there are different types of marijuana on the market, each with very different characteristics. There are many differences between purple marijuana and “normal” marijuana, for example:
– Color: purple-flowered plants, being rich in anthocyanins, present purple, red and blue tones in their leaves, stems and flowers, while normal marijuana presents green tones.
– Effects: purple marijuana has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, among others. A bónus for medical cannabis growers, which we do not find in “normal” plants.
Now you know that, in addition to their beauty, these purple marijuana plants can provide an extra point in the therapeutic or medicinal field.
What are the effects of purple marijuana?
Most purple cannabis plants allow for very pleasant relaxing and sleepy effects, which contribute to a general well-being. Although the effects depend on the two parents, in purple marijuana the effects tend to be characteristic of indica plants since one of the parents is originally from the Hindu Kush, being of indica origin.
Lilac marijuana is also known to have a tendency to contain very high and well balanced levels of THC and CBD. From these strains you can expect a pleasant instant high followed by an equally pleasant relaxation.
Although there are currently no studies on the medicinal effects of consuming anthocyanins through smoked or vaporized cannabis, there are studies that show the benefits of eating foods rich in this substance.
