As the first song to be released from the upcoming Black Panther Marvel movie, you may not expect too much from this one but it’s surprisingly catchy and the collaboration between Lamar and SZA certainly has its charms.
Starting off with a distorted hook (which sounds like a sample I know but can’t quite place) ‘All the Stars’ shifts gear up and down throughout to move fluidly from SZA’s soaring vocals to Kendrick’s trademark drawl. It doesn’t take long for you start nodding along to this one and then it gets under your skin and there’s no turning back.
Stripped back electronic beats suit both artists well and the build to a crescendo for the chorus is harmonious and hard-hitting. If this is setting the standard for the rest of the soundtrack, which Kendrick Lamar is rumored to be producing, then this could turn out to be a surprise hit for 2018. (4)
