The European Functional Flame Off its the first Glassblowing (Pipe Making) competition exclusively for European artists we provide colored glass and divide it into 10 equal packs , prior to the competition, we let the artist make an exchange of the glass between each other ,when the competition starts, the artists get 2 x 8 hours to execute and most important to complete their best functional piece.
There are two categories in which the EFFO artists have chances to win many valuable prizes. Each year we invite a group of acclaimed American glassblowers who judge the pipes based on the criteria like functionality, complexity and aesthetics.This year for the first time one of the judges will be European and it will be the winner of last year event.
We also wanted to engage our visitors and give them a chance to share their impressions. As a result, we created the People’s Choice category.
This year we actually created a 3rd category where attendant of the flame off and non can enter a piece they have made at home.
This year Flame OFF will be once again in UK, last year we rented a social club in London and this year it will be at Product Earth Expo where we are gonna have a huge space where we’ll gather the glassblowers but also our sponsors that have the chance to attend will have a booth there, the idea is to make a Glassblowing village with live glassblowing and related brands and business.
Creating pipes with the use of the borosilicate glass on a torch has always been the main focus of attention to the European Functional Flame Off. However, we try to merge the boro community with other glass scenes such as soft glass flame working, soft glass furnace and cold works like engraving.
