How far is too far?
The UK government’s drug policy is in need of serious review. How ill do children/people need to become before the government takes their heads out of the sand and approves a treatment that is staring them in the face.
Charlotte Caldwell has had all of the medical test results and medicinal breakdowns that she could possibly need to show that the treatment is a medical emergency, however the government continued to deny Billy the one medicine that is known to keep him seizure free.
They made Billy endure more life threatening seizures and his mother watch helplessly as she knew the medication that could stop it was only a few miles away.
Eventually on Friday 15th June the home secretary issued “temporary access” to the cannabis oil medication. This has only been granted for 20days and must be administered in hospital. This was only after doctors made clear it was a medical emergency.
Following this treatment doctors have informed Charlotte that as an increased level of medication would be require for Billy that the supply she had hoped would last for 6 months may actually only last 8 weeks and therefore the government have 16 days to issue an import licence so that Charlotte can arrange export from Canada to ensure that Billy has a continuous supply.
“The clock is ticking and the world is watching. Let’s hope they make the right decision.” Said Charlotte
Sir Mike Penning MP has called for “fundamental reform” of the system.
“Medical cannabis is a health issue, not a misuse of drugs issue,” “It’s about patients and relieving suffering.”
“It’s bizarre and cruel that we have a system that allows the medical use of strong opiates, but bars the medical use of cannabis.
