In the past, my main focus as a breeder was super potent Sativas that pushed the edge on potency.
Being a very driven person, I liked the get-up-and-go of strains like Vortex and Apollo-13. But now that I am a bit older I actually prefer a more calming strain. Like many Americans, I suffer from Anxiety and I am not really keen on dulling my senses with pharmaceuticals, so I am always looking for an alternative to modern medicine. I found the perfect combination in TGA’s latest creation: Dr. Who (a combination of Mad Scientist X Timewreck). Mad Scientist is a creation of one of our head breeders at Home Grown Natural Wonders, Odie Diesel. Odie works exclusively as TGA’s head breeder with his two sons Mush Mouth and MDSI to create interesting new hybrids such as Dr. Who. He created Mad Scientist by combining Medicine Woman with the famed Sweet Tooth.
The most interesting thing about Dr. Who is the complex terpene profile it contains, with high levels of many cannabinoids such as Beta-Myrcene, Alpha Pinene and CDC4 (that we have never seen appear before). When you combine the calming effects of a terpene, like myrcene, with the potency of 29.3% THC you have, in essence, a herbal Quelude. Dr. Who is very good for relaxing and relieving anxiety. I got my first taste of this amazing medicine in hash form, given to me by Mush Mouth in a small cleaned out Tabasco shaker, and every hit was sublime. As you inhale the vapor, a general calming effect comes over you and the tension in your neck relaxes. A few additional pulls on my vape pen and I was grinning and completely calm, which is unusual for me. As with all strains that are released under the TGA logo, before it carries our name I grow it out. I need to see, taste, smell and extract hash from the flowers to judge its effect and, like any grower; I feel I can grow it better than anyone else. That is not a knock on anyone’s skill, it is just a fact of growing; most growers prefer their own work.
I started a 5 pack, just like any grower that buys a pack of TGA seeds, and germinated them. After 45 days, we had 2 males and 3 females; the males were culled and the females were cloned before being transplanted into 15 gallon pots. It’s important to run a plant from seed and also from Clone IMO. I have seen completely different and better results from a mature clone over a young seedling that is flowered. So, we not only ran the 3 seedlings through a bud cycle but we also ran the 3 clones through as well. In the end my favorite was a 50/50 phenotype that incorporated traits from both parents. The Timewreck, while considered a sativa, has an almost effect on me; focusing my thoughts and helping me organize them. The Mad Scientist adds the calming effect of the myrcene as well as some nice purple coloring. Purple can indicate the presence of myrcene, but is not a guaranteed genetic marker.
Dr. Who also makes very pure white hash when processed using the Ice Wax Water Method and is so smooth in a Vape Pen or a 3 Hole Bowl used with a ceramic element that you can barely even tell you have ingested smoke or vapor. This is very important to me because I have Genetic COPD and only vaporize these days.
Now, when it comes to Cannabis Flowers, I have my very own personal bud taster, MzJill, who is the most discriminating pot snob I have ever known. She prefers Space Bomb and Timewreck over all our strains (she actually dislikes a few of our more popular strains so she is the perfect tester). While many tokers love any new bud they try, MzJill is more critical. So, if she likes a strain I know it’s a winner.
I dried the flowers over about a 7 day period and then, once the stems started to snap when bent, I placed them into a large glass jar to start the curing process. We are looking for a 6 week cure for the personal head stash, so it was a long time before she got to try some of these amazing looking buds.
Her weapon of Choice is a simple 14″ 40MM straight tube with a beaker bottom. I have often offered to get her some fancy creation, as we know so many amazing glass blowers, but she says “it’s for getting high, not looking at”. To start out, I picked the one that smelled the most unusual for her to try, hints of purple and thick Indica style buds that had a sweet fruity smell and rock hard bud formations. The sample was so hard I had to use a grinder to break it up for bong hits. The first hit I saw her eyes glaze over and she just said…”WOW!”. A few more hits and she needed a break before sampling the most Vortex-like phenotype. Later that afternoon she was ready again, so I picked the complete opposite sample. This one was lime green without any of the purple color and it had a slightly lime flavor mixing with the earthy flavor of the mother plant, Mad Scientist. MzJill immediately liked the smoke on this one better, it had a softer feel to the buds and it burned easier and pulled through the bowl without problems.
Over the next few weeks she went back and forth between the 3 phenotypes and to this day she can’t really say which one is her favorite, but she keeps requesting bowls of Dr. Who, which tells me she really enjoys it.
Then we started passing out sample buds to Weed Nerds and everyone was impressed that we came up with something so different than anything we’ve created before. The Dr. is in, he’s seeing patients left and right and they all seem to act like they visited Dr Feel Good! I know this amazing medicine has helped me very much and I’d like to thank Odie and Home Grown Natural Wonders for working with TGA in order to create this amazing new creation.
