The administrators of Health Select Committee wrote to some submitters on the medicinal cannabis bill, giving them the option to change their submission, as many had admitted to breaking the law.
“WE NEED TO PASS THIS BILL IF WE WANT TO GIVE PATIENTS THE ABILITY TO TRY BOTH UNDER RIGHT TO TRY AND UNDER RESEARCH.”
The legislation currently before Parliament, means anyone terminally ill will not have to rely on the discretion of the police or the courts if they’re caught with cannabis.

“Chemo just isn’t a lot of fun,” Rep. Daw told the committee. “You know, some patient may just say, ‘I don’t want to do chemo.’ They may do something else.”

The Government’s bill instead creates a legal defence for possession and use of cannabis if someone is in the last year of their life, without out and out legalising it. It would remain an offence to provide marijuana to a terminally ill person.
The medical marijuana program isn’t expected to be operational for another two years, but in the meantime NZ will decriminalize cannabis for patients in their last year of life.
