“People come to us crying because their dog finally has some relief from their pain,”
At a recent Hemp Expo in Colorado, bakers from The Biscuit Barkery have offered some special treats for dogs.
Val Downing and Nan Barron, co-owners of the dog biscuit company, showcased their CBD-infused dog biscuits at the 2018 NoCo Hemp Expo.
Both Downing and Barron are retired teachers since 2012, and they are trying to avoid having dogs to be “over-drugged.”
“If you had told us two years ago that we’d be making hemp treats, we would have said ‘no way,’” Downing said Friday.
“BUT WE HAVE A LOT OF COMPASSION FOR ANIMALS AND WE WANT THEM TO HAVE THE BEST POSSIBLE LIFE WITHOUT BEING OVER-DRUGGED, AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY CAN HAVE ALL THE RELIEF THEY CAN HAVE.”
Infusing CBD into the biscuits can relieve pain associated with arthritis, seizures or hip dysplasia in dogs.
Downing also said that the biscuits can also be used as a mild sedative for excitable dogs before car trips or visits to the vet.
“People come to us crying because their dog finally has some relief from their pain,” Downing said. “Those are the things we hold onto, rather than the memories of people who are negative.”
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is the non-psychoactive component found in both hemp and marijuana. Both plants are currently illegal on a federal level in the United States.
Colorado was one of the earliest U.S. states to legalize marijuana as far as 2012.
