Dun Agro built the house with “hempcrete” this is hemp mixed with water and glue. Hemp has a variety of uses it is possible to make paper, clothes, bio fuel and even food.
In the North Netherlands, where traditionally mainly potatoes and beetroot was grown, hemp has become an additional source of income for farmers. The harvested hemp is processed to fibers. The mixture of the woody core of hemp fibers, water and glue is pressed together in a mold to make prefab sections for houses. After three months of natural drying, the sections are ready and can be put in place. The houses have their outside walls, interior wall and their roof made from the hempcrete sections.
Benefits of the hemp home include being more durable, affordable as well as earthquake resistant. Dun Agro also states the negative CO2 footprint as a primary benefit of purchasing a hemp home. Hemp takes on 13,500 kilos of CO2 when it grows and it remains stored in the hempcrete.
On November 30th, Dun Agro put its hemp home on display. The company has already completed its second hemp home and has plans to build and sell more in the near future. In fact, with the present output of hemp in the Netherlands, the company estimates it can produce up to 500 hemp houses per year. If the demand increases, that number can easily be scaled up.
