Hello Professor,
I wanted to ask you about a pH meter/EC. My question is: I grow in soil, but I don’t know if I should measure the irrigation water or soil? I saw many testers that are for hydro and measured in water and others are for soil. Which could work for me? Thank you very much, Professor!

Dear Soiled,
Great Question! The short answer is both. You will want to take into consideration the base pH of the soil, the water source you’re using and how it’s affected by any nutrients you’re adding to it. If your water is strongly alkaline or acidic it will change the pH of the soil over time.
The best pH for soil based gardens is between 6.5 and 7.0. Maintaining this range is very important. If it falls outside this range the plants will suffer. Test your water/nutrient mix every time before you water and routinely test your soil to make sure that everything is nice and balanced. Use pH buffers to raise or lower the water/nutrient mix if needed.
For soil based gardens like yours, I like using an electric meter that has a simple metal probe and easily readable gauge that takes the guess work out of testing. Most water testers are chemical in nature. I suggest buying both. They don’t cost an arm and a leg and should really be considered standard equipment for all growers.
Now go change your pants!
